Case study Statera Energy
Creating a UK market leader in flexible energy generation and storage
Founded in 2015, Statera Energy (Statera) builds, owns, and operates flexible energy infrastructure to help balance the grid at best value for energy users – supporting the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future.
Investment
Statera develops large-scale, grid-connected energy storage and flexible generation assets. The site selection strategy is centred on alleviating fundamental imbalances and constraints in the UK generation, transmission and demand system.
As an early investor in the UK energy storage space, InfraRed was able to help Statera realise its early-mover advantage in the sector and rapidly gain scale by securing strategically located development sites, as well as forming key strategic partnerships.
Statera has integrated end-to-end capabilities to develop, build, and operate flexible generation and energy storage assets. This includes site selection, greenfield development, construction, financing, operations, and revenue optimisation.
InfraRed invested in Statera in early 2017 on the back of the company having successfully secured its first capacity market contracts, for the development of a hybrid portfolio of 200MW of battery storage and flexible gas assets. InfraRed completed the sale of its stake in January 2024.
At the point of sale, Statera owned a portfolio of operational and in construction projects across the UK comprising more than 1GW (600MW of battery storage and 420MW of flexible gas assets). This already represented a flexible and diversified asset base supported by high-value, long-term revenue contracts.
The company was also working to replicate the early mover advantage obtained in batteries to other long duration storage technologies, including pumped hydro and green hydrogen.

Impact
From the initial investment, InfraRed worked closely alongside Statera’s highly experienced management team to set the strategic direction and identify the market opportunities where there would be first mover advantages.
InfraRed also worked to scale the company and create ongoing value through active asset management. This included optimising financing structures, maximising efficiencies across procurement, construction, and operations, actively mitigating revenue volatility and helping to add key infrastructure capabilities across the organisation.
By working in partnership with the management team, Statera is now a market leader in flexible energy generation and storage, and is playing a key role in facilitating the UK’s energy transition to a low carbon, high renewables future.
